A common study trap is inflating the force of guidance: writing that the law 'requires' something a notice merely recommends, or conversely treating a mandatory point as discretionary. Worked scenario 1: you sight a power-driven vessel broad on your starboard bow with a slowly decreasing bearing. Because you have her on your own starboard side, you are the give-way vessel. The plausible mistake is to assume the other vessel will manoeuvre — after all, she is the stand-on vessel — and to delay until only a small, ineffective alteration remains. The better decision is to take early, substantial action yourself, such as a bold alteration to starboard to pass astern of her, while keeping a continuous bearing check and avoiding crossing ahead of the stand-on vessel.
Why it matters: the rules place the primary burden on the give-way vessel, and the stand-on vessel's duty to keep course and speed is explicitly conditional — she must act only when the give-way vessel alone cannot avoid collision, and a power-driven stand-on vessel taking such action must not alter to port for a vessel on her own port side. Risk assessment is a live process: identify hazards, judge likelihood and severity, apply controls, then reassess as conditions change. Certification confirms a vessel's limits; it is not a standing approval to sail in any conditions.
Worked scenario 2: a scheduled crossing of roughly twenty-five miles, with the forecast showing the wind freshening later in the day. The plausible mistake is to sail on schedule because the vessel is Code-certified, the departure is announced and the route is familiar. The better decision is a trigger-based reassessment: define in advance the sea state, wind strength or delay at which you will depart, shorten the passage or cancel; check the latest forecast immediately before leaving; and record the decision and reasoning. For each scenario you practise, ask: which parts of this decision are fixed by rule, which are within my professional judgement, and which would require me to explain a deviation? An answer that separates these three categories is easier to examine and easier to defend in real operations.
