Bridge Team Management is the organized use of all bridge resources, including people, equipment, procedures, and information, to conduct a safe passage. In exam answers, name the concept you are applying, state the decision in passage planning terms, and give the wording you would actually use on the bridge.
Passage planning: placing every BTM decision in one of four stages
BTM material treats a voyage as a continuous cycle: appraisal gathers information, planning produces the berth-to-berth plan, execution sets it in motion, and monitoring keeps the ship on it. Classify each exam scenario into a stage before deciding.
Appraisal is the information-gathering stage: chart and publication corrections, weather and tidal data, draft and under-keel requirements, air draft limits, traffic separation and reporting schemes, and port or company requirements. In appraisal-style questions, show that you identify which information is missing, not only which is present. An answer that builds a route without stating an assumed tide or clearance requirement leaves the decision incomplete.
Planning produces a berth-to-berth track with courses, safe speeds, no-go areas, abort points, and contingencies such as standby anchorages. Execution is timing departure and legs against those constraints, for example leaving with a favorable tidal window. Monitoring fixes position at stated intervals and compares actual against plan, with tighter fix intervals near hazards and cross-checks against a second position source where available.
A practical check: when you read any scenario, write the stage in the margin first. An order to alter course belongs to monitoring if it responds to a track deviation, but to execution if it follows a planned schedule.

- Monitoring: are fix intervals matched to the level of risk?
Closed-loop communication versus simple repetition
Repeating an order only proves it was heard. Closed-loop communication closes the cycle: the receiver restates the message, acts, and reports completion, and the sender verifies that the result matches intent. Use the full cycle in answers.
Trace a helm exchange element by element. The officer calls starboard ten; the helmsman repeats it, executes, and reports ten of starboard wheel applied, then reports steady on zero four five; the officer confirms steady zero four five. Label these as call, response, action report, and verification. Repetition catches mishearing, but only the final verification catches a wrong reading of the compass or rudder applied in the wrong direction.
Apply the same test to case passages. When a scenario shows an order followed by silence, or by an unrelated reply, name the broken element and the specific risk it creates: the conning officer may believe a turn has begun while the helmsman heard a different command. Do the same for VHF exchanges with traffic services, where readback and clarification of an ambiguous instruction are the loop-closing steps.
Error chains and situational awareness: naming the link before it holds
An error chain is a sequence of small, uncorrected mistakes that ends in an incident; situational awareness is the team's shared picture of present conditions and what comes next. Strong answers break the earliest link, not the last.
Situational awareness is commonly described through three components: perceiving what is happening, comprehending what it means, and projecting what happens next. Loss of awareness shows up as observable behavior, which is what you should cite in answers: confusion about position, fixation on one instrument, unresolved disagreement between team members, silenced or ignored alarms, and every person absorbed in one task while the traffic picture evolves unwatched.
When a case describes several small problems, list the chain in order, identify the point where interruption was cheapest, and name the team behavior that would have caught it, such as a challenge, an alarm response, or a short briefing. Breaking the first link costs less than reacting at the last one, and expressing that comparison explicitly is what turns a narrative answer into a management answer.
Worked scenario: the master-pilot exchange as a two-way briefing
A master-pilot exchange is a structured two-way briefing covering the pilot's plan, the ship's particular data, and the division of monitoring duties, not a signature on a card. In scenarios, require the plan to be spoken and agreed before pilotage begins.
Scenario: a laden bulk carrier drawing 12.5 meters is docking with a company policy of 10 percent under-keel clearance and a tidal window, and the pilot boards early. The weaker decision is to complete the pilot card from the previous port, hand it over without discussion, and let the pilot begin conning while the bridge team is still stowing gear and the helmsman is newly arrived. Nothing has been verified: the clearance assumption, the intended track, or who is monitoring what.
The better decision is a spoken exchange before arrival: ship data including draft, air draft, thrusters, and engine response; the pilot's intended track with key headings, speeds, and the abort point; tug positions and their roles; and an explicit statement of who monitors track, traffic, and engine movements. The master and pilot state clearly when the pilot has the con. This turns pilotage into a supervised team operation with a shared plan instead of a handover of responsibility.
Worked scenario: a night watch handover with traffic and weather changes
A safe handover transfers the situation, not just the paperwork. Defer the handover while any maneuver or task is in progress, deliver a structured brief, and confirm the relieving officer has the same radar and chart picture before accepting the watch.
Scenario: at 2300, a handover is due at night with a rain squall approaching and two crossing targets on the starboard bow. The weaker decision is to start the handover during an ongoing course adjustment and pass over only position and course, spoken from the chair, without both officers looking at the picture. The relieving officer accepts, and a target that was never mentioned later develops into a close-quarters situation.
The better decision is to finish the maneuver first, then hand over a structured brief: position, course and speed; traffic and intended actions toward each target; weather and visibility; the state of helm and engines; active alarms; standing orders; and the next planned events such as the next waypoint and the pilot boarding later that night. Both officers then confirm the same picture together on the radar and electronic chart before the watch formally changes.
Choosing the response level: monitor, advise, challenge, or intervene
BTM decision questions are escalation questions. Before naming an action, place it on the ladder: monitor the developing situation, advise the conning officer, formally challenge the unsafe action, or, when risk is immediate, intervene.
The ladder works because each step raises the social cost of speaking but reduces risk faster. Choose the lowest level that can close the safety gap in the time available, and escalate when the previous level produced no change. Intervention does not end the team structure: once the immediate risk passes, responsibility returns to the agreed conning arrangement and the team debriefs the event.
Classification practice is where this pays off. Describing a situation that required only a status call as a challenge, or using an advisory tone where collision risk was immediate and unanswered, are the two classification errors to train out of your writing. Label every action in a practice case, then have a partner label the same case and compare choices.
Use the wording column of the table as phrasing practice: say each line aloud so the register of each level, neutral, cautionary, assertive, and taking control, becomes automatic.

A two-week practice sequence with a scored self-check rubric
Rehearse BTM as performances, not notes: script an exchange, run it aloud, score it against observable behaviors, and rotate roles. Two weeks of short daily drills with a partner covers planning, communication, handover, and escalation.
An adaptable sequence: days one to three, write the four planning stages and one checklist item per stage from memory, then check against your references. Days four to seven, script and speak one master-pilot exchange and one watch handover, scoring each with the rubric below. Days eight to ten, run paper cases and classify every action on the escalation ladder. Days eleven to fourteen, re-run your lowest-scored drill, then add variants such as a degraded instrument or an unanswered challenge. Stretch or compress the days to fit your own schedule.
Score each drill zero to two on five observable items: you named the concept being applied; you used closed-loop wording including final verification; you covered the full handover or exchange structure; you placed each action at the correct escalation level; and you broke the error chain at the earliest point. A total of ten points is available, and eight or more is a reasonable learning milestone showing the drill itself is solid. This measures drill fluency against your own baseline; it does not predict your exam result.
